Description

A twenty-four inch push broom with a hardwood block, stiff synthetic fill and a steel brace between the handle and the block. The brace is the part that distinguishes a broom that lasts from one that does not: without it, all the push force goes through the threaded handle socket, which works loose and then splits the block. Stiff fill is for coarse debris on rough concrete, a loading apron or a yard — it flicks gravel and swarf rather than riding over it. It is the wrong broom for fine dust on a smooth floor, where stiff fibre simply launches the dust into the air and you want a soft or split-tip fill instead. The fibre is synthetic rather than natural, so it does not soften when wet and does not rot if the broom is left standing in a puddle, which it will be. Hang it by the handle; standing a broom on its fill sets a permanent curve into it within days.
