Description

A ductile iron bench vise with a five-inch jaw, a swivel base with two lock points and a replaceable serrated jaw face. Ductile iron rather than grey cast iron is the specification to insist on: grey iron is brittle and fails suddenly and violently if a cheater bar is put on the handle, which happens in every workshop eventually, whereas ductile iron bends before it breaks. The swivel base with two lock points holds position under side load instead of creeping. Jaw faces are replaceable because they are a wear item and because you will want soft aluminium or fibre covers for finished work, which is the single most common way people ruin a part in a vise. Mount it at the corner or slightly overhanging the bench edge so long stock can pass down past the front face; mounted in the middle of a bench, half of what a vise is for becomes impossible. Bolt through the top with backing washers, not lag screws.
