Anti-Fatigue Mat

Description

A five-eighths inch closed-cell nitrile sponge mat with bevelled edges on all four sides and a pebbled top. Anti-fatigue matting works by making the standing surface slightly unstable, so the small postural muscles in the legs keep making micro-adjustments and blood keeps moving, instead of a person locking out on concrete for eight hours. That is why thickness and rebound matter and why a thin rubber mat does nothing at all. Nitrile rather than PVC or open-cell foam because nitrile keeps its rebound where oil, coolant and grease are present; the cheaper materials absorb oil, flatten permanently and then become a trip hazard that someone has to write up. The bevelled edge on all four sides is the difference between a mat and a hazard — a square-edged mat in a walkway is something to catch a toe on. Sweep under it weekly, because grit trapped underneath abrades both the mat and the floor.
